Seven fire trucks were called to the scene of a brush fire that forced the evacuation of The Hotel Wailea on Sunday afternoon, the Maui Fire Department said.

At 6:42 p.m., a brush fire was reported near 4050 Kalai Waa Street in Wailea. The Hotel Wailea was forced to evacuate, and the Kihei Community Center was opened as a temporary evacuation shelter. Maui Electric Co. also reported shortly after 7 p.m. that the Grand Wailea, just over a mile away. had lost power.

Seven fire trucks, two water tanks and one ladder company were fighting the blaze. As of 9:30 p.m., the fire department did not know how many acres had burned and said that the fire was not under control.
