Old Church, Bank Building Opens as Coworking and Event Space |

The former US Bank building, the one housed in an old church on the corner of Vassar Street and Wells Avenue, is under new ownership. It's now a coworking and event space called The Virgil. Doors opened to the public this week.

"This building has so much rich history in Reno," said Rachel Macintyre, Co-Founder of The Virgil. "It was built in the 1920s at the Stead Air Force base and was relocated here in the 1940s, most commonly known as Reno Little Flower church, and then most recently as the US Bank."

Now it's a coworking space that doubles as an event venue.

"It turns out that making a coworking space work and having it be affordable is a really challenging thing to do without private office space," Macintyre said. "And we really wanted to create community workspace. So for us, what we did is decided we'd use our space for weddings and private events as an additional revenue stream. That allows us to keep costs down."

It's a project that's been in the works since 2019.

The new owners consulted with local wedding planners, caterers and event space designers to create a brand new look, while preserving the building's history.

"There's a mirror here from the church days, and we have this beautiful stained glass wall," Macintyre said. "The stained glass was somewhere else in the building, we relocated it and built that wall. The massive chandelier is original, all of our wainscoting is original, and we repurposed a lot of the materials to create doors."

They're using the bank's old safety deposit boxes as post office boxes.

By day, it's a community coworking space. Nights and weekends, you might see a yoga class, a workshop - even a pop up wedding here.

"We're bringing back what Reno is known for in the quickie wedding," Macintyre said. It's a 90-minute affair, so come on it, you get a mood board, pick your flowers and cake. You get married, champagne toast, passed apps, cake cutting, see you later - bring in the next couple. It's going to be pretty great, especially coming out of Covid, it's a really nice opportunity for us to create something that's accessible for people who weren't able to have their wedding last year and are now struggling to find space."

The first day of office use is free, and they're offering deals on yearly memberships right now.

"We're a space for everyone," Macintyre said. "It's really important that everyone feels like they belong and everyone feels like they are welcome. So if you're working from home, if you're a digital nomad, if you're a freelancer, a small business owner, if you've been assigned to remote work, come on in and hang out with us, we'd love to meet you."
