George Newman Obituary, Death – On July 20, 2023, George P. Newman, a resident of Collington in Mitchellville, Maryland, died peacefully. George was born on June 1, 1937, in Vienna, Austria. His mother, aunt, and he fled the Nazi annexation of Austria and immigrated to the United States, where his father had arrived the previous year, two years later. George followed his family to Springfield, Massachusetts, where he completed his secondary education at Classical High School.
He was a graduate of both McGill University and the School of Journalism at Columbia University. George subsequently served two years stationed in France with the United States Army. George, a sixteen-year veteran of Clinton, New York, held the positions of correspondent, city desk editor, and editorial editor for the Utica Daily Press and Utica Observer-Dispatch. Before that, he worked for the Associated Press as a correspondent and for the U.S. Peace Corps as a public information officer. George retired from the newspaper industry early and took the foreign service examination alongside candidates half his age.
He attained success and subsequently obtained employment at the U.S. Information Agency of the U.S. State Department, where he remained until his retirement in 2002. Furthermore, he completed his military service in Togo, Austria, Germany, and Zambia. Barbara Fairchild, his wife, Joan Newman, daughter Leslie Johnson (Mel), Jonathan Newman (Kasia), Shannon Rogers (Mike), Jerry Green, a stepson, and granddaughters Kalina, Eva, and Alexa survive him. His father, Walter Newman, mother, Emmy Newman, and step-son, Todd Newman, all predeceased him.
